Fluid Voice Studio takes security and student privacy seriously, with a number of precautions directed towards minimizing collection/retention of student data, secure (end-to-end encrypted) communications, and automatic deletion of student data.
Data retention and deletion
Fluid Voice Studio implements General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance, as relevant, and to the extent possible given our resources as a small studio. FVS attempts to minimize the information collected from students, and to facilitate deletion or correction of any retained data.
Student information is retained only to a minimal, necessary extent. Typically, data that is collected and retained includes student contact information, lesson notes including description of student progress and goals, and other relevant information the student elects to provide.
Students are not required to provide any specific personally identifying information. Furthermore, students are permitted (and encouraged) to use pseudonyms or provide as little information as possible (other than minimal contact information and payment information via PayPal).
Almost all potentially identifying information is automatically deleted after a short period of time, with the exception of contact information (e.g., email address, or Discord/Signal username). Contact information is typically retained for ease of subsequent communications, but can be deleted upon request.
Lesson notes are retained for a short time in order to pass on to the student and plan further lessons, but are then deleted. Students may record their lessons or request lesson recordings, at their own discretion. Otherwise, no student voice/video or other data are recorded or retained.
Student data/information about students is only utilized for teaching purposes within Fluid Voice Studio, and will never be published in any form, nor transmitted to any third party.
Student data is kept encrypted or otherwise secured (such as within a cloud storage account protected by password and two-factor identification).
No cookies or social media trackers are used by this site or by the scheduling site.
Due to the nature of the subject matter, in some cases, student information may include data within special categories as described in the GDPR, Article 9. Such information is utilized/retained only to the extent necessary for notes and lesson planning. Resulting notes are provided to the student and eventually deleted as described above.
In addition to the precautions described above, any/all student data will be deleted or rectified upon request, for any reason and as quickly as possible.
Remote lessons are provided via secure communication apps
Feel free to get in touch by emailing dusty@fluidvoice.studio if you have any questions about setting up communication apps.
Lessons will be conducted via Signal when possible/preferable for students, to improve privacy and security. Lessons can also be conducted via Discord, or an alternative voice/video communication program upon request. Students are encouraged to use Signal, which benefits from end-to-end encryption and auto-deleting message.
Signal offers end-to-end encryption (E2EE), meaning that the chat provider and other people/agencies never have access to message or call contents. Using a secure communication app with E2EE can reduce the likelihood of being identified or persecuted based on messages/calls. Discord supports E2EE for select features, such as voice/video calls (but not for text/direct messages).
Signal (recommended option):
Signal is a free, secure communication app that supports E2EE by default.
Please note: Signal requires a valid cell phone number to set up, but the phone number does not need to be provided. Signal can be accessed via phone or desktop client app.
Discord or other communication apps may be good options for students who do not have access to a working cell phone number.
Discord or other alternative communication apps:
Discord is a communication app which offers some secure communication features, but has also been associated with some vulnerabilities in the past. While Signal is encouraged, we can meet on Discord instead if those options don't work well for you. Voice lessons via Discord are reasonably secure, so Discord is still a viable option — but Signal is offered for students who prefer the higher degree of privacy and security that those options can provide.
Please feel free to get in touch if you have a preferred communication app that supports text and voice/video communications. Other communication apps can be used when feasible, upon request.
Minimal contact info needed for scheduling lessons
Scheduling requires Signal/Discord username, and email address
Please do provide one of the following when scheduling a lesson:
A) a Signal username (including the numbers, for example, username.1234)
B) a Discord username (if you are not able or do not prefer to use Signal)
Please also provide a working email address that you will be able to access. Please consider registering using an anonymous/alternate email address. You will receive scheduling emails from Fluid Voice Studio at your provided email address as lesson reminders, or in case we run into any issues communicating via Signal and/or Discord.
All emails related to student scheduling will be automatically deleted from Fluid Voice Studio's mailbox after a short period of time.
Name and phone number do not need to be provided
When scheduling lessons on the Fluid Voice Studio scheduling site, you do not need to provide your full legal name, phone number, or any other personal identifying information. The scheduling platform asks for a first and last name and phone number, but you can register using any name you want (such as a pseudonym, alternate name, or only initials), and you can leave the phone number blank.
For your own privacy, please consider registering with an alternate name or pseudonym, first name with any random last name, or initials only, etc.
Payment info
Payments are handled via PayPal (using a PayPal account balance, or credit/debit card processed via PayPal). Lesson purchases appear as generic purchases on PayPal transactions/bank statements, without describing the nature of the purchase. Fluid Voice Studio will not be mentioned by name in account statements/transaction records, but will instead appear as a generic business name. Payments may alternatively be handled via cryptocurrency in some cases, upon request.
